The Fortress of Kerch


The Fortress of Kerch is a unique fortification monument of the 19th century. The construction of this fortress started in 1857 and took over 20 years; it was led by E.I. Totleben, an outstanding military engineer. The Fortress of Kerch is a brilliant example of military engineering of the third quarter of the 19th century. The Totleben Fort, several bastions, the star fort, the Minsky and Vilensky lunettes, the Lithuanian battery, Ak-Burun fortifications, mortar and coastal batteries and a lot of other buildings are located in Pavlovsky and Ak-Burun capes. The fortress occupies more than 990 acres.
